Yin-Yang and the five elements.

外国の方々と仕事をしていると、日本や東洋の文化について説明を求められることが多々あります。

そして知らないことがたくさんあることに気づかされます涙。

今回は陰陽五行説の説明をまとめました。

私はこのコンセプトが好きです。

The theory of the Five Elements (五行) is the concept in Chinese philosophy conceiving the world as dynamic states, or phases, of constant change.

It describes the interaction and relation between Yin and Yang, between phenomena.

The basic substances of the material world according to the 'Theory of the Five Elements' are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.

All material things are made of a single or a combination of the Five Elements, since these are the fundamental components.

All Five Elements are equally important and should form a balance, while being in constant move and cyclical change.

Each existing material, combined of parts of the Five Elements, shows a predomination of one of the Five Elements and is assigned an abstract generalization, hence can be classified accordingly.

五行の思想は自然界は木（もく）、火（か）、土（ど）、金（ごん）、水（すい）の5つの要素で成り立っているというものでした。

五行の行という字は、巡るとか循環するという意味があります。5つの要素が循環することによって万物が生成され自然界が構成されていると考えられていたわけです。

この五行（5つの要素）の相互間には、相性が良いとされる「相生（そうじょう）」、相性が悪いとされる「相剋（そうこく）」があります。

Generating

Wood feeds Fire -> Fire creates Earth -> Earth bears Metal -> Metal collects, enrich Water -> Water nourishes Wood

 相生

木は火を生じ -> 火は土を生じ -> 土は金を生じ -> 金は水を生じ -> 水は木を生ずる

この関係は永遠の循環を示すものです。「相性が良い」という言葉はここから生まれました。

Interrelation of the cycles

The Controlling - Weakening cycle or Ke and Wu cycle represents a conflicting aspect.

- Wood can break the gound (Earth), but Earth can bury Wood, too

- Earth can absorb Water, but Water can cover the land (Earth)

- Water can extinguish Fire, but Fire might evaporate Water.

- Fire can melt Metal, but Metal migt not melt before Fire is extinguished.

- Metal can cut Wood, but Metal might become dull before breaking Wood.

相剋

木は土に勝ち、土は水に勝ち、水は火に勝ち、火は金に勝ち、金は木に勝つというのが「相剋」です。

・木は土から養分を吸い取って生長する

・土は水を吸い取ってしまう

・水は火を消してしまう

・火は金属を溶かしてしまう

・金属は木を切ってしまう
